Communicating effectively, especially in the case of controversial issues, is quite a task. There are many unique challenges that a writer may face while structuring the narrative. Among others, he has to balance the dictates of his conscience with valid realistic assessments in order to move the readers. 

Support Arguments With Facts  

Many factors become significant when writing about controversial topics. Quite naturally, readers scan such articles with a critical eye. Such readers usually have already formed strong opinions on the particular subject and therefore are ready to question every aspect of the article. 

Most importantly, in controversial writing, the writer, more than the writing it is under the spotlight. Readers quickly form opinions about the writer - Is he right or wrong? Does he belong to a particular group and therefore has a hidden agenda? Moreover, most readers interested in reading controversial articles are generally well-read and are eager to know whether the opinion they have on a particular subject belongs to others too. Therefore, just presenting your views is not sufficient; you have to support all your arguments with relevant data that is in the public domain.

Maintain A Flow In Expression 

Holding the reader's attention is the key to effective controversial article writing. The writer has to present to his readers a well-researched version of his thoughts in article form. It is also important to maintain the original point-of-view throughout the entire article, or readers will be confused. 

The author should make an appeal to reason, and present relevant content to back up that appeal. During the research process, the writer sometimes changes his mind because of new data or other opinions. For this reason, the writer of controversial works must be open to the investigative process. He must realize that his article can serve as a link in an evolving, new knowledge chain that others will build up over time.   

Choose A Suitable Approach  

After you have finished your research and worked out your final viewpoint, it is time to choose your approach to writing so that readers are directed towards your ideology. There are two broad approaches with which you can approach your readers: 

• State Your Point Upfront: Here, you state your point of view and prove it in the article. This approach is good if you are targeting a particular readership. If you are trying to reach a broad spectrum of readers, however, this approach could alienate those who do not share your point of view.
• Show Restraint In Sharing Your Perspective: In this approach, the writer presents a balance of choices in the article. The article, in this case, includes well-reasoned arguments, supported with valid evidence. This makes the readers weigh their choices and form an opinion based on the analysis of all choices.  

Under all circumstances, avoid dogma, heavy-handed opinions and bombast.  These reflect only the writer's ego and not his reasoning and intelligence.
