Seven-Point Guide To Writing Effective Health Articles

Writing informative and structured sentences is the key to writing a good health article. A medical author may have a great deal of information on a particular subject, gathered through extensive research, but that information is useless if the writer cannot communicate the concepts in a concise, clear manner. 

Before beginning to write, the writer must spend some time organizing the ideas for the article so that the writing communicates properly the author's intention. An incoherent grouping of concepts negates the entire exercise, wasting both the writer's knowledge and the reader's time. It is important to create an outline with a logical flow of information and then follow that outline strictly in order to create a coherent, readable article.  Here are some suggestions for organizing and communicating complex medical topics. 

  1. Write An Abstract: In the abstract, the author needs to justify the choice of that particular topic, explaining why it is important. The abstract should also include the objective of the article, or the main point that the author is trying to get across.
  2. Use An Effective Title: An article's title plays a very important role in persuading or dissuading the reader from reading further. Use a catchy headline. For instance, for a medical article related to tooth decay, "Ten steps to prevent your teeth from decaying" is much more effective than "Teeth and their related problems." The idea is to personalize the topic and make the reader feel that the article is speaking directly to him.
  3. Use Simple Sentences: Convey the idea clearly with short and crisp sentences. Most professional writers and editors use sentences no longer than about 20 words. Use appropriate punctuation and avoid jargon.
  4. Maintain Proper Flow: Write coherently in such a manner that one sentence connects well with the next. Use paragraphs to convey one thought at a time.
  5. Correct Voice And Tense: As far as possible, use active verbs in writing medical articles. For instance, "Quality research produces good articles" uses the active voice; "Good articles are produced by quality research" uses the passive voice, which is less desirable for expository writing. Also, use past tense sentences, even while giving references.
  6. Use Abbreviations Effectively: Medical terminologies are long, and employing them as they are could make the work appear repetitive. Write out a term the first time it appears in a text, give its abbreviation (if available) in parentheses, and then use the abbreviated form thereafter.
  7. Avoid Plagiarism And Proofread: The article should have a good summary with reliable references. The writer should read and re-read the article upon completion to check for errors and to make sure that the concepts flow in a logical, clear order. A professional proofreader can also help with the editing process.  After all, the writer's reputation is on the line with every word.  

If the author has followed these steps, the medical article is now ready to be posted to a website, article directory or medical journal.
